Abstract: Effects of a combined mixture of three herbal immunologically active substances (Preparative Esberitox N, recommended in the therapy of virus-induced respiratory infections) and its ingredients, Echinacea purpurea, Baptisia tinctoria and Thuja occidentalis were tested against viral strains of six taxonomic groups. Experiments were conducted in vitro. It was established that Echinacea purpurea radix ethanol extract possesses pronounced inhibitory effect on influenza virus Ð (H3N2) replication, activity preserved in the lyophilisate extract. Baptisia tinctoria radix extract also showed marked activity against influenza virus Ð(H3N2), but Thuja occidentalis extract showed no antiviral effect. The combined preparative manifested distinct inhibitory effect on rhinovirus 14 replication and a moderate one against influenza virus A(H3N2). Activity against human rhinovirus 14 was preserved in the lyophilisate combination preparative, but activity against influenza virus A(H3N2) was lost. All substances tested were without distinct effects against Coxsackievirus Ð’1, ЕCHO13, influenza virus B, respiratory syncytial virus, polyomavirus SV40 and human cytomegalovirus.
