Peptic ulcer treatment using western natural products and traditional Chinese medicine formulas
Author(s): Rui Aguiar
Abstract: Peptic ulcer (PU) remains a challenge despite advances in treatment, particularly due to rising antibiotic resistance and the drawbacks of long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use. This study explores the holistic treatment approaches of Western herbal medicine and of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The traditional western knowledge, drawn from reference authors, was checked through a review of scientific literature. A three-pillar strategy addressing Helicobacter pylori eradication, stomach acidity reduction, and mucosal protection can be implemented with these natural products. Literature on the Chinese traditional medicines used against PU was searched and summarized. Different Chinese formulas, used according with syndrome differentiation, have been used with positive results. Evidence suggests that combining natural remedies with conventional therapies and integrating traditional knowledge with scientific evidence can enhance PU management. This interdisciplinary approach bridges Eastern and Western medical traditions, offering new opportunities for public health improvements.
